It’s crunch time, you’re sitting at your computer with your shoulders slumped down heavily, your face in your hands covering up your exhaustion.  You rest your head back in search of relief due to the increasing weight of your thoughts.

Thoughts flanking your left and right rapidly firing questions of how you are going to fend off bills, provide for yourself and your family (if you have one), and see yourself in a better position than you currently are.

You ask yourself; “How would I be able to get to the next level?” You have made your declaration and have made it known that you don’t want to spend your best years in school, trying to ascend your way to the top of the class because let’s be honest, going to school has never been your kind of jam.

You were more of a System of a Down kind of person in your glory days and going to school would see your dreams end in Chop Suey. Would you be interested if you found out there was another path you could take?

You just might have to strap up your bootlaces and camp it out a bit.

The New About Face

With not wanting to be Another Brick in the wall, what is going to see you get to the next level? Simple, you can just join the Army and become more meat for the machine instead.

No, you don’t have to join the Army, you can opt for the less painful version which is a coding boot camp. Coding boot camps are short-term intensive training programs that provide students with practical and job-ready technical skills.

Boot camps enable students to go from “drooling at the mouth I can’t read, nor can I feel my brain” to “it’s so easy a caveman can do it.” Shout out to my Geico OGs. This provides students with the confidence and knowledge needed to immediately apply their new skills to solve real-world problems, please keep in mind solving world hunger and peace will not be included.

Now, undergoing this training looks great on paper but can have a steep learning curve depending on the instructor and class structure. Like the aim of a trade school, a coding boot camp is usually built around building marketable technology skills that can be leveraged toward a lasting career…or until they decide to let you go, I’m not going to lie to you, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows kid.

And with how well-known companies are treating longtime employees like they’re the side-chick in public and acting like they don’t know them nowadays it’s something to brace for. The world will embody you as a stray cat, floor the gas pedal, hear a thud and pretend it never saw you in the rearview mirror.

Boot Perfect

So, coding boot camps, who uses them? Well, people who want to be developers obviously. This goes either way since people who are not developers and people who are can both benefit from entering a coding boot camp which either could be attempting to break into the field or simply learn another avenue of IT.

These programs often cover basic programming languages like JavaScript, SQL, and Python, along with modules on current industry software, tools, techniques, and best practices. You know, everything you would get if you enlisted minus being yelled at daily and performing repetitive self-affirmation of “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home”.

As mentioned earlier, there’s no need for prior coding experience but at the same time having a little experience is a plus. A quick thought let’s say you were homeless and just so happen to have the funds through a Miracle on 31st Street sign yourself up for a coding boot camp, you could theoretically learn the skills needed to land yourself a job. However, these conditions are theoretical and in a perfect world, the odds may be low but they’re still there.

Coding boot camps, like many trade schools, are typically run by private, for-profit companies and is offered both in-person or online depending on the program.

Camp Field of Dreams

Coding boot camps, why are they so important? Well, there’s a massive shortage of skill, and developers are finding that trying to use those good ole job descriptions isn’t the vibe anymore.

To pair with that companies are finding themselves starting to favor the results of over-time-based experience versus simply just attending a four-year college and getting real-world experience later than sooner. This means going out and getting involved in as many hands-on projects as you can versus asking your parents for that sweet financial blood juice called a loan.

Now you may be wondering “Are coding boot camps worth anything?” The short answer is yes. I have checked around a few forums and have seen a few hiring recruiters say that this along with certificates is something they take into consideration.

I have a ton of certificates however, my email inbox is piled with rejection letters and my phone doesn’t even ring (the ringer is on, I checked). Am I saying this for you to feel bad for me? No, but you’re welcome to.

Just know, IT and a few other fields have gray areas, and this is one of them. I will say coding boot camps can work it just depends on your goals and you. That’s rich coming from me, I know but shut up, I’m being positive.

Wrong Boot Size

Wondering if completing a coding boot camp is something you could put on your resume? I will tell you…yes, yes you can, again I’m being positive. Not only does it show you have the needed skills and education, but it also displays that you have the dedication and work ethic to successfully complete a challenging program.

Now, while all of this sounds great, one thing to keep aware of is coding boot camps have some shortcomings such as limited personal instruction, which is depending how big the group you’re a part of, the instructor may not be able to provide enough feedback regarding your query on a project.

This is one of those, sitting with your hand raised high, the teacher selects you, and hears your question but never answers because someone in the class is having an outburst. They don’t mean to ignore you, but thanks to your classmates, it happens.

The other issue to be aware of is the “one size fits all”. Coding boot camps sometimes will have you learn something either you already know, or they think you should, but your skill level isn’t there and this ends up hurting more than helping.

This sucks but being selective with what camps you opt into by using reviews and checking the curriculum could save you from being fitted wrong.

So you’re sat at your computer and it’s time to look and evaluate how your OnlyFans account has been doing but you dread the thought of having to log in, and crunch numbers, and the overshadowing thought of having to brainstorm new ideas begin to make you gag because… well frankly, you don’t like having to worry about this additional work on top of what you’re already managing.

You figure this would be better suited for a group who had a knack for handling this much information and coming up with possibilities for you to gloss over.

If you could find and hire a team like that would see yourself being the big boss and could even, make your life slightly easier and slightly less shameful.

Now the only thing is to find this special group to crunch your numbers so you can get to sleep at night. Sorry mom.

Dumpster Diving Data

Who are these mad people who rummage through data like a crackhead rummaging through your trash in hopes to find anything that’s going to help them score some…well crack?

Look no further than Data Analyst. Creative name, again I know but Linda listen. Data Analyst is professionals who retrieve, organize, and analyzes information from various sources to help an organization achieve business goals.

They often use logic, statistical techniques, and computer programming to turn numbers into information that an organization can use to improve workflow and business processes. So if you ever wondered why your job strangely and suddenly came up with more tasks for you to do at work, yeah, it’s safe to assume these guys were the culprit.

An important goal of the analysis is to distinguish between what data is important and what data should be given less weight. They do this by using data analysis to produce accessible graph charts, tables, and reports.

This is information that’s exciting for them but boring to the average person who wants to upload a twerk video online. In any organization, data analysts are also responsible for data quality and preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders.

You can picture them being the boogeymen you would hide from when you’re having a bad third quarter and you don’t want to hear about how much your company is failing at it.

They’re a real “in your facts, not your feelings” type of people.

Data Shakes

Do you want to know who in their right mind uses these data hounds? Get ready for this tall order, retail banks use data extensively to understand how their customers use their accounts and to help identify security risks. They’re also leveraging big data in location intelligence to determine how to manage their branch locations and set location-based performance goals most efficiently.

Farmers, not being the first people on your list that would use data analysis, are now using them for agriculture and they are posed to grow only more important as predicting the weather and squeezing maximum productivity out of the land. This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if Earth wasn’t trying to heal itself due to the need of feeding a growing population of humans.

Real estate firms and this is no surprise here, leverage big data for better property analysis, better trend analysis, and a better understanding of their customers and markets.

Data has long been crucial for doctors seeking to figure out, based on analysis of a larger number of data points collected from many patients, examples are findings in which blood pressure range is normal or how much sugar you should consume each day.

Now the healthcare industry is using data analytics to answer bigger, more complex questions. Like seeing how much they could charge you for treatment, I say you because insurance companies ensure they don’t pay all of the cost.

Data Diagnosis

These data-horny-driven people, how important are they? Well, they can help an organization understand risk and take preventive measures if the organization chooses to listen.

As a result, data analysis helps companies make informed decisions, create a more effective marketing strategy, improve customer experience, and streamline operations, and that’s among many other things.

All of these are excuses used to squeeze that sweet work juice from employees in the name of performing what’s called “improvements”.

Implementing data analysis into business models means companies can help reduce costs by identifying more efficient ways of doing business and by storing large amounts of data.

Side effects of reducing cost are but are not limited to, getting rid of your favorite coffee machine in the office, moving Taco Tuesday to Wednesday, lack of proper working equipment or equipment, and can even cause job loss via company downsizing.

So yeah, these data fiends have a massive play and a mass amount of uses. Again, everything is data and it’s everywhere, so these people are always turned on.

Only Data Abound Fans

You may be thinking “why would I hire someone to do all of this, I get aroused at the thought of crunching numbers.  I could give this a shot. Do I need a degree?”

Here’s a degree not needed inbound however, you are going to need a structured and formal approach to learning the necessary skills. The best way to do so is through a project-based course. Data analysis is also not required to have advanced coding skills.

Instead, they should have experience using analytics software, data visualization software, and data management programs. Data analysts are required to have a strong grounding in mathematics to succeed.

Again, if you’re an advent reader of mine, you already know Z-Daddy is out. Computers do the math for me, that’s how it’s always been. Reviewing and if necessary, improving your math skills may be needed before learning to become a data analyst.

The field of data science is fast-paced, demanding, and challenging. Learning to perform your responsibilities correctly can take some time too and that can add to your stress.

However, keep in mind, you’re not a machine and that working is important but it’s not worth sacrificing your health, then again, no job is.

Pixar’s Cars didn’t know this about Rust…

All right, so, you’re sitting at your computer, plotting to make your great escape into the all-so-coveted world of Information Technology (IT) but the buzz of “what programming languages are trending” prompts halt and confusion.

You think to yourself, “just when I thought I picked the right coding boot camp, the best online course, the perfect programming language only to experience derailment, THIS… IS… MADNESS!! (Not Sparta)”.

You slump back and deflate into your computer chair, eyes synced with your mind racing back and forth with feelings of panic. The walls begin to darken, zeroing in, siloing you into thoughts of being the only one.

Whispering to yourself; “I’m alone in this”, you feel despair, quickly followed by a fit of rage while you stare at the computer screen.

Whoa, wait, let’s stop right there.

Before you flip your desk and begin smashing everything in frustration, let me tell you something… you’re not alone.

I bounced from Python, Java, and Kotlin (Kotlin was a fling, nothing serious) before I settled back into learning Python. It’s okay to “dip the toe” or (if you feel like being immature) “give it just the tip” when learning a language.

With there being many programming languages in the world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. So, in short, go for the language that would best suit you, which may be the language we’re talking about today, Rust.

Rusting with Jay

What is Rust? Well, that’s a simple question and I’m glad you asked it.

Rust is the reddish-brown material that develops when something has been sitting in a garage for too long. If you’re anything like Jay Leno, you must have several cars sitting so long that one, two, or maybe even thirty are starting to develop rust.

Okay, now with the bad rust jokes aside, it’s time to tell you what rust in the computing world is actually.

Rust is known as a general-purpose programming language designed for improved performance, safety, and concurrency (meaning you can run more than one copy of a program simultaneously).

Like Java, C#, and Swift along with several other programming languages, Rust is considered to be memory safe, meaning they all handle memory automatically instead of relying on the developer.

This means the developer (or programmer) can program away and not have to worry about having to use a garbage collector.

No, not the people who collect your trash every week or so.

Garbage collectors, when enabled, will automatically free up memory space that has been tied to objects which are no longer being used by the program.

Rust also prevents developers from running the risk of introducing certain types of bugs in relation to memory.

Memory safety bugs often tend to be an issue making this language more than secure.

So, you could think of this as one of the programming languages that stops you from having a Homer Simpson moment and yelling “D’oh”.

Kink of Rusting

Rust has been around for about 11 years or more now and hasn’t gotten the chance to get rusty since many industry leaders have adopted the use of Rust. Some are the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Dropbox, and Cloudflare just to name a few.

AWS uses Rust for their CloudFront, Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as well as several other services which use Rust as well.

Dropbox uses Rust for the filing engine because this language being memory safe, prompts fewer memory error messages to deal with. Preventing developers from reenacting Britney Spears in her famous song, “Oops, I did it again”.

Since the Rust compiler will refuse any unsafe code, Cloudflare has chosen this language for this and its other security features.

Rust is normally used for projects dealing with Command Line Tools (CLI), web development, and system programming.

In the arena of data science and analytics, Rust is not up to the level of Python or R, but Rust does offer properties for creating backend systems focusing on data parallelization and low-level code optimization.

All this boils down to if this language was your side piece, it very well may be finding its way to becoming your main piece.

Facing the World with Rust

Rust has given programmers more flexibility to develop functional code without having to worry about memory issues. Due to Rust’s speed and performance, data scientists have made this language a choice for when handling machine learning and large amounts of data in a hurry.

So, if you wanted to imagine trying to rifle through a mountain of warehouse data in record time, this language has you covered.

You’re also not going to find too many cult followers as you do with Python, Java, or many of the other programming languages, instead you may find people from many avenues in the tech world joining the Rust ever-growing community.

With there being many applications and growing in popularity, Rust doesn’t seem to be slowing down or going anywhere soon. In some cases, it may find its way next to Python and Java being the top languages to learn.

Pursue or Not

Thinking about getting a job as a Rust developer or interested in making it an addition to your skillset? Either way, you can’t go wrong.

However, just knowing this language isn’t going to be good enough to land you a job. Since Rust is so close to C++, you are going to be expected to code in this language as well.

Again, you don’t have to know everything about the language, just enough to be able to move around and make sense of everything in view.

Also, depending on what your potential place of work is looking for you are going to have to be familiar with Linux and other operating systems.

Notice how you must be familiar with mentioned items and a degree was not brought up. In this day and age, being able to show you have practical knowledge supersedes having a four-year computer science degree.

Building a small list of projects using this language will boost your resume and help you stand out from the herd. Leading to rust never developing on you (sorry, I know that was bad, that was my last rust pun).
